How to Tell if Your Lawn Needs Watering

How to water your lawn and garden for the best results, year-round.

Part of our "Watering Dews and Don'ts" segment this video covers how to tell if your lawn is actually in need of watering or not.

Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Bryan with NaturaLawn of America. Today we have four quick tips on how to check to see if your lawn needs to be watered.

The first test is a visual test. As you can see, this grass here is green. If your lawn needs to be watered what will happen is it will turn to a blue to blueish gray tint.

The second test is what we call the footprint test. Essentially what you do is you take a step out onto your lawn, you move your foot and if your lawn essentially leaves a footprint and doesn't spring back up it is in need of some watering.

The third test is take a close look at the blades of grass. What they have is a center vein running down the middle—almost looks like it cuts them in half—and your blade of grass is going to curl or cup inward when it's under stress to reduce surface area.

And then our fourth way to check is what we call the screwdriver test. You take a screwdriver or soil probe or shovel and stick it straight into the ground. Give yourself enough room so you can reach down in there and feel for any moisture 3-4 inches down. If the ground is moist, obviously it doesn't need to be watered.

So, there's your four quick ways to check to see if your lawn needs to be watered. Thank you for choosing NaturaLawn of America.
