How to Care for Your Indoor Plants Though the Winter Months

Throughout the cooler months our skin, hair, sinuses, etc. can become quite dry. Whether you have a humidifier or not, you need to adjust your living environment to make it comfortable for you, your family, and pets. Don’t forget, indoor plants need special care during the winter months too. They can become dry and lifeless as they go through the change of seasons. In addition to the lack of humidity, there is less sunlight due to shorter days. This combination of change can put stress on your plants. Adding Protilizer® Seed and Plant Activator to the care of your plants during these seasonal changes, can reduce the stress from climate changes, reduce plant shock, and also help by adding beneficial microbes which will allow them to flourish.

Below are some additional tips

Placement of your plants needs to be planned. Avoid putting them near cold, drafty areas, especially close to windows or doors. Also, placing plants too close to heaters, wood stoves, fireplaces, etc. will cause them to dry out prematurely.

House Plant

What are some signs the air is too dry for your indoor plants?

  • The leaf tips and/or edges of the leaves become brown and brittle.
  • Leaves look droopy and lifeless.
  • New leaf growth will have difficulty unfurling.

You can add moisture to your plant’s environment by:

  • Purchasing humidifiers which are suitable for rooms where your plants are located. A humidifier is beneficial not just during the winter months but also if you run an air conditioner during the summer. Also, try arranging your plants close together but make sure they’re not touching. Place an extra small humidifier among them.
  • Move plants to a place which often has higher humidity than other rooms, such as the bathroom, kitchen or laundry room. Unfortunately, these rooms tend to have less natural light so you might want to invest in a plant light.
  • A nice lukewarm gentle shower once and awhile is a nice thing to do for your plants. It creates an environment they love and as a bonus it removes dust and debris from the growth. Misting will also help clean your plants.
  • Place pebbles in the planter tray below your potted plant. Then, place water in the tray making sure the pot isn’t in direct contact with the water as that may cause root rot.

Signs that your plant needs more sunlight:

  • Your plant is lacking its vibrant color and is now pale green or yellow. Variegated foliage will turn to one solid color.
  • The growth of the plant is slowing down or has stopped completely.
  • You will notice the plants losing its leaves.

To provide adequate light:

  • Consider purchasing a grow light.
  • Moving your plant to a sunnier location in the home. But remember, other than succulents such as dieffenbachia, cacti or palms, most plants prefer indirect light.
